The Forgiver (Ghafir)
Verses 69-76 GROUP_1247 40.69-76
69
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي آيَاتِ اللَّهِ أَنَّى يُصْرَفُونَ
Do you not see how those who dispute God’s signs, are turned away from the right path—
70
الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِالْكِتَابِ وَبِمَا أَرْسَلْنَا بِهِ رُسُلَنَا فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
those who reject the Book and that with which We sent Our messengers shall soon know—
71
إِذِ الْأَغْلَالُ فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ وَالسَّلَاسِلُ يُسْحَبُونَ
when, with iron collars and chains around their necks, they are dragged
72
فِي الْحَمِيمِ ثُمَّ فِي النَّارِ يُسْجَرُونَ
into the boiling water and then are thrown into the Fire,
73
ثُمَّ قِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تُشْرِكُونَ
and then they will be asked, ‘Where are those whom you associated [with God]?’
74
مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ قَالُوا ضَلُّوا عَنَّا بَل لَّمْ نَكُن نَّدْعُو مِن قَبْلُ شَيْئًا كَذَلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ الْكَافِرِينَ
They will say, ‘They have been lost to us; nay, we did not invoke anything before [that had real existence].’ Thus God leaves the deniers of the truth to stray;
75
ذَلِكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَفْرَحُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَبِمَا كُنتُمْ تَمْرَحُونَ
that is because you exulted in the land without justification and because you behaved insolently.
76
ادْخُلُوا أَبْوَابَ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا فَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى الْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ
Enter the gates of Hell to stay therein forever. The abode of the arrogant is evil.

Commentary
(a) Who were the ones who were happy with untruth and indulged in false pride? These were men who held great stature in their times. They attained some worldly elevation, which alongwith their material possessions made them arrogant and vain. Their success in worldly matters had developed in them a false impression that they were the ones who had attained success, though in actual fact they were the truly deprived people. As the high ranking men of a society become the rejecters of the Truth, the common people also follow them and start denying the Truth. In these verses, a scene of the world Hereafter has been described, when these people will be cast into Hell to be punished for their arrogant behaviour. Their overweening pride would have ultimately dragged them to such low levels that they will find no way to uplift themselves from their position.
